The 2013 Kia Sorento makes sense for fewer cents

2013_kia_sorento_photo

Having moved from the realm of SUVs to crossovers with its redesign in 2009, the Sorento both looks and feels the part. Combine that with a family-friendly 7-seat option, not to mention

a sporty V6 and SX trim level and Kia’s flagship crossover checks a lot of boxes.

OPTIONS GALORE

Thriving in its second generation, the Sorento can be had as either a five- or seven-seater, with three engine options and starts at just $23,150 for the LX model.

A base 2.4L 4-cylinder makes 175 horsepower with 169 lb-ft of torque, while a gasoline direct injection (GDI) version of the same engine can be had raising output to 191 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque. Both are suitable for daily commutes though if you’re driving style is a bit more aggressive then the 3.5-liter V6 in our test car with 276 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque is perfect.

Both models include a 6-speed automatic transmission with either a front-wheel drive or optional full time all-wheel drive systems, as well as Kia’s Sportmatic manual shifting feature.

Fuel economy is solid at 21/30 mpg (city/highway) for 2WD models and 20/26-mpg (city/highway) for the AWD. GDI models favor added performance and only offer one more mpg in the city on the front-drive version.

As for the V6, it achieves 20/26 mpg (city/highway) for the front-driver and 18/24 mpg with AWD.

DO A DOUBLE TAKE

Kia has earned accolades over the last few years for a new wave of vehicles with charismatic German-inspired styling cues. More handsome and less rugged, the Sorento improves with age with smooth lines, a bold front fascia and sleek lighting. Fully equipped in SX trim like our test car and it’s quietly alluring. And with five trims available, there is definitely something for everyone.

Going basic means getting the LX model, which offers standard 17-inch alloy wheels, body-color heated side-mirrors with turn signals, silver roof rails and the option of front fog lights. Priced at $2,250 more, the LX V6 has standard silver roof rails along with the aforementioned items.

Stepping it up, the EX trim ($26,950) encompasses some added features like standard automatic lighting as well as 18-inch hyper-finish alloy wheels and a rear spoiler. For an extra $2,700, the EX V6 adds the same tech features plus options like power-folding heated side mirrors with turn signals and a panoramic sunroof.

Our sporty SX trim tester ($31,700) is the shiniest example with 18-inch mirror-finish alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, chrome roof rails, stainless-steel accent plates, body-color bumpers, side sill trim, colored body-moldings, stainless-steel step pads, chrome tailpipes and LED taillamps.

With so many options to choose from, in the color department Kia lets you play it safe with options like silver, grey, black and white while those with a taste for the theatrical can pick Tuscan Olive, Dark Cherry, Metal Bronze or Baltic Blue.

SO MUCH MORE ON THE INSIDE

With so many options to choose from, the Sorento’s interior comes well equipped even before you start to check the order boxes.

Standard amenities include modern tech like USB input jacks, Bluetooth, steering wheel-mounted controls as well as power windows and door locks with keyless entry. Available options include Kia’s UVO in-infotainment system with rear-camera display, auto-dimming rear-view mirror (with compass), a handy back-up warning system and a 2nd-row sunshade screen

Within the top three trims (EX, EX V6 and SX), expect regular features like a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift knob, leather heated front seats, a 60/40 split-folding 2nd-row and black wood trim.

Our tester was dressed in the SX Premium Package with great tech and sporty leather finishings. Included in the SX model is everything from an 8-way power driver’s seat and 10-speaker Infinity audio system, to a custom gauge cluster, dual-zone climate control, keyless access with a push-button ignition, as well as illuminated stainless steel scuff plates and both heated and cooled front seats.

The result of all these add-ons is a cabin that’s mature yet sporty, though perhaps still with a bit too much low-grade plastic.

Our 7-seater test car with three rows sounds ideal for families, but that last row is best left down for added cargo room, with the seats used only for emergencies. Space in the third row is tight, even for children, and cargo room behind it a minimal at 9.1 cubic feet. Drop the 50/50 split folding seat and trunk space is improved to 37 cu-ft with 72 cu-ft total.

Of note, while 5-seater models feature an under-rear-cargo-floor storage compartment, that space is absent on the 7-seater model.

FIRM RIDE: FOR BETTER AND FOR WORSE

The Sorento moves with the stance of an SUV and the ease of a car, with capable steering and handling but there is still a little ruggedness often found in larger SUVs. Handling is capable, though the trade off for reduced body roll comes in a stiffness that can make the ride bumpy at times.

On better roads, it’s a relaxing drive and is stiff enough to be engaging when necessary. The V6 engine helps too, and with a small trade-off in fuel economy, it’s the one to go for.

THE VERDICT

A capable and practical machine, with good looks and solid fuel economy, the Sorento is an attractive buy for many crossover shoppers. Entry offerings fit the bill for those who need the space and utility on a tight budget and don’t hide the fact that their interiors match their price. Models like out SX tester, however, deliver much of the toys you’d expect in a premium crossover, at a serious discount. It might not have the fancy badge, but the Sorento SX makes sense for fewer cents.

Heels on Wheels - 2013 Kia Sorento Review

059834-heels-wheels-2013-kia-sorento-review
INTRO TO THE SORENTO VEHICLE
A more rugged mid-size SUV, the Kia Sorento is on point with price, interior comforts and constructional frame changes that have resulted in a more refined ride for up to seven passengers. Another bonus is gas estimates remain both eco- and budget-conscious at just 21 miles-per-gallon city and 27 highway under an impressive 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine.

I drove a 2013 Kia Sorento with the larger 276-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine with front-wheel drive paired to a six-speed automatic transmission featuring Sportamatic for clutch-free manual shifting. Available in three trims (LX, EX and SX), a four-cylinder or V6 engine, and optional all-wheel drive with a lockable center differential, my mid-level EX trim came with the following standard equipment: leather upholstery; eight-way power driver's seat; three-setting heated front seats; dual-zone climate control; black wood trim; XM radio; steering-wheel mounted controls; Bluetooth; UVO Powered by Microsoft; auxiliary and USB audio input jacks; trip computer; backup warning system; seventeen-inch wheels; and heated outside mirrors with integrated turn signal. Optional equipment and packages included an upgraded Infinity audio system, navigation, and a sunroof. Total vehicle price came to $34,390.

What makes the Kia unique is that it's a smaller 3-row SUV. Main competitors to the Kia Sorento are in the dozens, with the Mazda CX-9 and Toyota RAV4 and meeting most closely mirroring the same value, space and style attributes.

HEELS ON WHEELS REVIEW CRITERIA

Stylish But Comfortable Results: While Kia continues to be an attractive choice for its sleek designs and generous standard features at the base trim, my mid-level EX is a recommended choice as it adds some essentials like leather seats, a better climate control system and Kia's connectivity system called UVO Powered by Microsoft. Short for "Your Voice," this voice-recognizing infotainment system streamlines calls, text messages and music from all your media sources. There is some displacement of center stack controls and poor lighting at the gearshift.

Reliability & Safety Factor: The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the 2013 model ratings of "Good" in frontal, side impact and roof strength crash tests, making it a Top Safety Pick. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the Sorento a 4-Star rating. Safety standards include an advanced airbag system, electronic stability control, traction control, electronic brake distribution, hill assist control, downhill brake control, LATCH and rear child-safety door locks.
Cost Issues: A base or Kia Sorento LX begins at $23,150. A fully loaded Sorento SX ready to tow will remain under $38k.

Activity & Performance Ability: Much more impressive that former years, the Sorento's switch to a unibody frame aids in smoother handling and quieter cabin ride. Towing capacity is 3,500 pounds with the V6 engine. The vehicle is roomy inside with an easy to park traditional boxy shape. Turning radius was better than expected. Overall, it is a very steady drive with excellent safety measures in tack yet not as agile, quick and light as the Mazda CX-9.

The Green Concern: Under the 3.5-liter V6 engine, fuel economy is 20-city and 26-highway for an average of 22 miles-per-gallon, while all-wheel drive gets 18-city and 24-highway for a combined 20.

FINAL PARTING WORDS
The 2013 Kia Sorento differs from your typical mid-size utility vehicle by combining sporty, efficient and value-driven qualities for a three-row crossover that can meet all budget and capability needs.

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Extend the life of your tires with careful driving

3

Extend the life of your tires with careful driving. Observe posted speed limits. Avoid fast starts, stops, and turns. Avoid potholes and objects on the road. Don’t run over curbs or hit the tire against the curb when parking. And, of course, don’t burn rubber.

Kia unveils all-new 2014 Forte Sedan at Los Angeles International Auto Show

All-new Forte Offers More Space and a Sleek European-inspired Design

2

Pulling the silk off the all-new 2014 Forte sedan today at the Los Angeles International Auto Show, Kia Motors America (KMA) revealed a stunning European design-inspired sedan that makes it clear the Korean auto manufacturer has another winner in its line-up of sought-after cars and CUVs.  Sitting on an all-new chassis that is longer, wider and lower than the previous-generation Forte, the all-new third-generation Forte will offer more room, more performance and more premium amenities when it’s expected to go on sale in the first quarter of 2013.  The all-new 2014 Forte will be offered in LX and EX variants with a choice of an efficient 1.8-liter engine or a more powerful 2.0-liter engine.

“The all-new Forte significantly raises the bar, offering upscale amenities and eye-catching appeal,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president of marketing & communications, KMA.  “When you combine exclusive available features like a ventilated driver’s seat and UVO eServices in a car with such an attractive design, it’s very clear the all-new Forte sets a new standard for the compact segment.”

Set to arrive at Kia retailers in early 2013, the all-new Forte will represent the heart of KMA’s small-car line-up, replacing the current Forte, which has been a sales success story since launching in 2009.  Slotted between the Rio sub-compact sedan and the best-selling Optima mid-size sedan, the all-new Forte includes a raft of unexpected available premium features in a package that easily accommodates five passengers and their belongings.

Unexpected Premium Features
Offered in LX and EX trim levels, the all-new Forte proudly carries on Kia’s reputation for offering premium features that redefine automotive segments.  The LX model comes standard with steering wheel mounted audio controls, SiriusXM™ Satellite Radio1, Bluetooth® wireless technology2, power windows, air conditioning and power heated outside mirrors among the many features that make the Forte stand out from its competition.  The optional Popular Package adds 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, keyless entry with remote trunk release and a sliding front armrest. The Eco Package includes Kia’s ISG (Idle Stop & Go) system, dual-zone automatic temperature control with rear seat ventilation and unique “eco” badge.

Stepping up to the EX trim broadens Forte’s appeal with additional comfort and convenience features.  Kia’s next-generation UVO in-vehicle infotainment system with eServices is standard and can now be integrated with an optional navigation system.  Additional standard EX features include remote keyless entry with trunk opener, rear camera back-up display3, a sliding center armrest and a cooling glove box.  The new optional Flex Steer system allows the driver to choose between three distinct steering profiles:  Comfort, Normal and Sport.  Features found in the optional Premium Package include heated front and rear seats, a 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat with class-exclusive air-cooled ventilation, leather seat trim, power sunroof, 17-inch alloy wheels and push button start with Smart Key and a heated steering wheel.  Opting for the Technology Package garners HID headlights, LED tail lights, a 4.2-inch color LCD cluster screen and dual-zone automatic temperature control with rear seat ventilation.

Enhanced Performance, Improved Ride and Handling
The all-new Forte offers spirited performance thanks to two advanced four-cylinder engines.  The LX features a 1.8-liter powerplant, while the EX comes standard with a 2.0-liter engine.  Both engines feature dual continuously variable valve timing and a lightweight intake manifold that reduces weight by 30 percent over a cast unit.  The aluminum “bed plate” located below the cylinder block reduces engine NVH levels and improves block rigidity by 30 percent.

With 148 horsepower available at 6,500 rpm and 131 lb.-ft. of torque on tap at 4,700 rpm, the 1.8-liter MPI inline four-cylinder engine found in the LX routes power to the front wheels through either a standard six speed manual transmission or an optional six speed automatic gearbox.

Forte EX enhances the driving experience with a 173-horsepower (at 6,500 rpm) 2.0-liter inline four cylinder GDI engine.  With a robust 154 lb.-ft. of torque available at 4,700 rpm, the EX comes standard with a six speed automatic.

The all-new Forte rides on a chassis that is longer (by 1.2 inches), lower (0.6 inches) and wider (0.2 inches) than the previous Forte sedan.  With its 106.3-inch wheelbase, two inches longer than the outgoing model, the all-new Forte rides on a McPherson strut front suspension and a coupled torsion beam rear axle.  On-center steering feel is improved utilizing larger bushings and revised front suspension geometry.  Electric power steering has replaced the hydraulic system from the previous Forte, reducing parasitic load. Optional Flex Steer puts the driver firmly in control with settings for Comfort, Normal and Sport, which vary steering effort at the touch of a steering wheel-mounted button.

The base LX manual rides on 195/65R-15 tires, while 205/55R-16 tires on 16-inch alloy wheels are optional.  The top-of-the-line EX is shod with the same 55-series tires. Low-profile 215/45-17 tires mounted on sporty 17-inch alloy wheels are optional.

Sport Sedan Design From California
With an aggressive stance, broad shoulders and a windshield rake that can only be described as sporty, the all-new Forte looks as good parked as it does carving through a remote canyon road. Influenced by European sport sedan styling, the Forte’s modern aesthetic was born in California at Kia’s American Design Center in Irvine.

Dramatically swept headlight lenses cut deeply into the front fenders and incorporate projector headlamps.  LED positioning lights create distinct eyebrows, making the Forte instantly recognizable in a crowd.  Gentle sculpting along the Forte’s lower flanks taper the sheet metal inward, affording the car a taut, nimble appearance without diminishing its road presence.  Around back, the up-kicked fender line and trunk design, with its deep horizontal crease, lend width and charisma while allowing the complex curves of the tail lights to flow over the rear haunches.

A Modern and Sophisticated Cabin
Opening the wide doors reveals a cabin sculpted in organic curves.  Gentle ripples across the instrument panel convey serenity, as if small waves are radiating from a pebble dropped into a pond. The driver-centric cabin is canted 10 degrees and features high-quality materials and soft touch points.  Large, easy-to-read instruments dominate the binnacle, and secondary controls fall easily to hand.  The optional 4.2-inch color LCD screen nestled between the white-on-black gauges in the EX provides trip and ancillary vehicle information front and center to the driver.  Tasteful chrome bezels ring the HVAC rotary knobs and the optional push-button start.  Additional chrome accents, standard Bluetooth® hands free phone integration and power windows, mirrors and door locks enhance the all-new Forte’s premium feel.  Optional leather seating trim, power sunroof, and dual-zone automatic climate control with rear seat vents and HID head lights take the Forte to new levels of sophistication.

Another 5-star review on Cars.com for Fairfax Kia!

"I've purchased two cars from this dealership in the last year, and both times my experience was very positive. The staff was honest about the prices and inventory, and was very low-pressure. The prices for the cars I purchased was very competitive and the finance department was also very helpful and transparent in what they were doing. The service department is always speedy with maintenance and never hassles me. Love this place." - Bitwize01

Overall Score:
5

I have purchased two cars from this dealership in the last year, and am very satisfied with both my purchases. Both times I came in I worked with a low-pressure salesman who let me move at my own pace and they were very patient. I do a lot of research before I come out to a dealership, so I appreciate that I don't get the hard sell or the lengthy speeches about the car's features here. The whole process is pretty quick and the finance department is honest about what they're charging and what you're signing. The staff is helpful and friendly. After I purchased my cars, I was glad to discover that the service department is as helpful and efficient as the sales staff. The free oil changes are a great boon and the mechanics are always open about what they'd like to do and what they've done with your car. I had a grueling search for my first car, and went to a ton of dealerships. I'm glad to say that Fairfax Kia definitely changed my outlook on what buying a car should feel like.

[MOTORWARD]: High Performance Kia Pro Ceed GT Confirmed

Pro-ceed-gt

Kia officially confirmed they are working on a high performance GT version of the new Pro_ceed model. It was almost a given, because it’s not exactly a secret that Kia desperately wants to become more sporty, and also because the new Pro_ceed is too good looking to remain just a family car.

Going on sale in the Spring next year, the Pro_ceed GT is a proper hot hatch. It will be powered by the firm’s 1.6-litre turbocharged GDI engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Now, 1.6 doe not sound like a lot, but that’s the way it works these days. Car maker have to compromise on the size of the engine and rely on stuff like KERs or turbos to make up for the lost performance. Otherwise they wouldn’t meet consumption and emissions targets.

It’s hard to tell what the car would look like based on this teaser picture Kia has given us, but you can notice the large wheels, sports grille and bumpers with red accents, and some new form of ED lights which look quite interesting.

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Consolidate your short driving trips

3

Consolidate your short driving trips. Most of the wear and tear — as well as the pollution your car generates — takes place in the first few minutes of driving. Doing several errands at once, during low traffic hours if possible, will keep your engine happier longer.

" I almost never give top ratings, but I am honestly very impressed., so 5 stars," says Tom in this amazing review on Yelp!

"Just saw the lousy reviews, cant understand.  I almost never give top ratings, but I am honestly very impressed, so 5 stars.  Brought a Sorento there in August after shopping all other dealers.  Worst parts first: least impressive storefront/lot, sleepy or preoccupied sales staff,  also dont bother with their internet operation - mostly just an afterthought, compared to everything else there.  When ready to buy,  go in and ask for their most experienced salesman (Khadka Shanker), dont bother with the new guys. BUT but tops the competition in virtually everything else.  Best price/deal - I went in after doing my homework so they didnt bother haggling much, after determining all the incentives we could qualify for, said no one can beat our prices - and they were right.  We hit all the 5 dealerships in the area but the other best offers were $1,200 to $400 higher than Fairfax.  In fact the last one said (after haggling there for 4 hours-and I know the boss) that Fairfax is taking away all their Kia business, and we just can't match - please go there, so we did.  Best dealership freebies - free lifetime oil, filter and tires (without long waits if you call the salesman first.)   Beyond the call of duty : We had to come in after closing to do the sale on a Sunday, and they all waited for us, for the whole time (probably took hour and half for the paperwork, car was washed and ready to go already).   Best after sale service: sometimes you hear that if you get a really low price they will treat you like dirt and try to make it back when you come in for service.  Not here.  There were several issues that we came in for to fix, and everytime they took care of it quickly and completely.  The worst was some kind of dirt or film on the rear window that I couldnt get off after more than a month of use - they said they never saw it before but called in a window pro and he buffed it off.  My neighbor brought almost the same Sorento from Beyers a week before me, cost him $1,000 more, and he gets treated like a leper there (but they have free sodas and a nice waiting room.)" - Tom L.

Kia Grabs Brass Ring At Madison Square Garden

Kia-basketball-b

Kia Motors America is extending and expanding its deal with Madison Square Garden, wherein Kia becomes a signature partner and official vehicle of the venue. The new partnership should give Kia some of what it has needed for years: awareness, affinity and positive brand perception.

The deal gives Kia a big placement at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, tie-ins with the New York Knicks, the New York Rangers and the New York Liberty, and presence around college basketball and tennis, as well as the Concert Series at The Garden. The partnership also includes an expanded presence for Kia on MSG regional sports networks, MSG and MSG+, and integration on the Garden, Knicks, Rangers and Liberty websites. Also, Kia vehicles will be on show year-round with a custom-built display space in the lobby entrance to the Arena.

Kia's Official Vehicle designation will include branding at the Arena for all associated sports events and the Concert Series. Kia gets digital and static signage throughout the Arena; features on GardenVision, the center-hung scoreboard; and on-court and on-ice branding and promotional contests. Kia will be there for the Concert Series that includes Madonna, Justin Bieber, One Direction, The Who and Neil Young and Crazy Horse. Kia will have a presence at all Friday night Knicks and Rangers games as the presenting partner.

Tim Chaney, executive director of marketing communications at Kia, points out that the automaker is not new to the Garden as it has had a seven-year relationship with the Knicks plus sponsorship of the the Rangers NHL team, activated with the New York Kia dealer group. "But this is the whole building all year long for multiple years." Beyond this, Kia is official vehicle of the NBA, and also has separate, individual sponsorship deals with 14 NBA teams. "But this really is the first of this scale for us; being a signature partner gives us exclusivity to select categories," says. He tells Marketing Daily that New York, media central, is the place to have this kind of deal. "And if you are going to have a presence in New York, this is the property to do. He adds that the Garden's multi-year, billion-dollar investment in facility renovation also works as a complement to Kia's own packed vehicle-launch schedule. "We looked at it simply: transformed Kia at the transformed Garden."

There's also a CRM element with Kia customers getting access and experiences with MSG's sports brands and events. The automaker says it will collaborate with the Knicks and Rangers on a number of promotions and events also for Kia customers. Some of the offers include tickets and special experiences at games. As the official vehicle of the Concert Series at The Garden, Kia will also work with MSG on promotions for select concerts.

Dave Kissel, president and CEO of Chicago-based sports-event media network InStadium, says the virtue of a major sponsorship deal like Kia's is that, among other things, it locks out the competition against an audience a marketer determines to be spot-on for its brand. "But even for the most well-funded brands you can't lock up every thing. So even the big guys have to be careful about how and where and when they spend money on sponsorships. But, clearly, sponsorship does work as part of the overall media mix. It's a $23 billion market; clearly, it works."

Indeed, Kia is not the lone auto brand with category-exclusivity in the Big Apple: across the East River, Honda in August became the 10th brand to hitch its star to the new Barclay's Center as a top-tier sponsor, becoming official vehicle of both the Brooklyn Nets and the arena itself. Among other things, Honda will sponsor the Brooklyn Hoops Winter Festival in December.

"I was treated like family... I would and will buy there again for sure," says the author of this 5-star review on Edmunds!

"Carlos was great, the rest of the experience went smoothly, but the star was the product itself. Make a great car and customers will come. My Optima has features and amenities that other cars don't at twice the price. I purchased a Spicy Red 2012 Optima EX. I now have 11k on it, have been to service twice for oil changes (free) and tire rotation ($20). Both times I was treated like family, and sat and chatted drinking fresh free coffee with customers and employess like I had been thre for years. Maybe I am easy to get along with....or maybe I did my homework on the new Optima I purchased and knew exactly what I was geting and how much was a fair price. I would and will buy there again for sure after I have used up a good portion of service-free life of this fun to drive Optima EX. It really likes the highway between 50 and 80...only when allowed of course. :)" - cski

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: One indicator or blinker is flashing faster than the other

2

When you indicate one way and the blinker flashes quicker than when you indicate the other way, it means one of the bulbs has blown. An auto parts store will be able to tell you what sort of bulb you need to replace it with and your manual should show you how to get at the indicator bulbs - they're different on every car.

Batman Comic Books Inspire Tricked Out Kia Optima Making World Debut in New York's Time Warner Center this Week

Legendary Artist Jim Lee and RIDES Magazine Help Bring The Dark Knight's Personality and Pursuit of Justice From Comic Book Pages to Kia's Flagship Sedan

Corporate101012

Kia Motors America (KMA) has teamed up with DC Entertainment and RIDES magazine to create a brooding, Batman-inspired Optima that goes on display this week at the Time Warner Center and signals the beginning of a 10-month partnership based on the iconic characters that make up the Justice League. Influenced by the artistry of comic book icon, Jim Lee, the Kia super hero vehicles will become a force for good in the world by raising awareness of DC Entertainment's "We Can Be Heroes" giving campaign, a relief effort to fight hunger in the Horn of Africa (www.WeCanBeHeroes.org). Fitting for the caped crusader's dark and mysterious personality, Kia's range-topping Optima SX Limited wraps cutting-edge technology and premium amenities in a sleek, aggressive design customized with several unique Batman elements.

"Batman is one of the most popular Super Heroes of all-time, and showcasing in a fun and creative way Kia's top-of-the-line Optima SX Limited as a Batman-themed custom ride underscores this car's potent combination of premium features and turbocharged performance," said Michael Sprague, executive vice president, marketing and communications, KMA. "The Optima is our best-selling vehicle and has played a significant role in Kia becoming one of the fastest-growing automotive brands in the U.S. over the last five years1, and it is the perfect platform to introduce our partnership with DC Entertainment and the Justice League to benefit the 'We Can Be Heroes' campaign."

Working together, Kia, DC Entertainment and RIDES magazine designed and built the Batman-themed Optima, transforming the exterior with a matte- and piano-black paint scheme, a dramatically lowered coilover suspension and muscular ground effects kit, huge Ksport performance brakes for extreme stopping power, custom-designed 20-inch black wheels and a performance exhaust system. Other exterior modifications include a custom front grille shaped like a batwing that took over 40 hours to create, yellow LED lighting accents throughout the vehicle and the iconic bat signal etched into the HID headlights.

Moving beneath the cape, the Optima's seating surfaces are costumed in custom black leather and suede with bold yellow accent stitching. Gotham City's streets are full of villains and the Batman-themed Optima is ready for action at a moment's notice with a Bat suit and cowl mounted in the trunk and utility throwing stars installed in the center console.

As Kia's sales have grown, so has the company's role as a responsible corporate citizen, and the Batman-themed Optima furthers those efforts with two video screens in the front-seat headrests that will raise awareness about the worst hunger crisis in 60 years by featuring a custom "We Can Be Heroes" video that demonstrates how one small act can make anyone a hero.

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Avoid Brake Problems by Watching for Warning Signs

2

When it comes to your car’s safety, brakes top the list of systems that need monitoring. However, many people are unaware of the signs that indicate a car’s brakes may need maintenance or repair.

For routine maintenance, it’s important to check the vehicle’s braking system at least once a year. A thorough inspection should include brake lining wear, brake fluid level, rotor thickness, condition of hoses and brake lines, brake and dash warning lights, as well as taking the car for a test drive to detect other potential brake system problems.

It is important to be alert and recognize the danger signs of brake problems. Other warning signs include an illuminated brake warning light, brake grabbing, low pedal feel, vibration, hard pedal feel and squealing.

“Sometimes it’s only a few miles between a soft brake pedal and a pedal that goes clear to the floor,” said Stephen Powell, NAPA/ASE Technician of the Year and owner of Thoroughbred Transmissions & AutoCare, Inc. in Laurel, Md. “But consumers easily can protect themselves from brake failure by watching and listening for a few simple clues.”

Powell says noise is one of the leading indicators that something is awry with brakes. “Any out of the ordinary sound is often a sign that brakes have worn to the point they should be checked,” he said. “Watch especially for a grinding noise, and if your brakes typically throw off brake dust on your wheels, look for a sudden increase or decrease in dust.” He added that finding small metal flakes on the wheels is also a sign that brakes should be checked.

Another leading indicator is the feel of the brake pedal, Powell said. If the car pulls left or right when braking, or if the front end shakes, those are both signs of excessive brake wear. If the brake pedal begins to feel spongy, it could be a sign that air has entered the brake system or fluid is low.

“A mushy brake pedal, along with a decrease in brake fluid, could also indicate brake wear,” Powell added. “Check the brake fluid reservoir to make sure it’s topped off. If not, then brake fluid is likely remaining at the wheel to fill the space caused by wear.”

Many cars now have ABS (Automatic Braking System) that initiates a rapid- fire pumping sequence to the brakes to keep the car straight during sudden or hard braking. “If the ABS light illuminates on your instrument panel, then it’s likely that the wheel sensors have detected excessive build-up of metal particles from the brake system,” Powell said. “Most cars are designed to shut down the ABS when excessive particle build-up occurs.” Powell added that a shutdown ABS does not prevent you from stopping, just that the ABS feature isn’t working.

Other tips:

  • Wheels should be pulled and brakes checked once a year by an ASE- Certified technician. “It’s not uncommon to replace brakes after 12,000-15,000 miles,” Powell explained. An inspection typically includes the rotors, calipers, drums, pads, pistons and brake lines.
  • Brake systems should be flushed and brake fluid replaced every two years. “Brake fluid absorbs moisture in the system and becomes acidic after two years or 30,000 miles,” Powell said.
  • Check your owner’s manual or ask your ASE-Certified technician to see what kind of brakes your car has and how they are adjusted. For example, most drum brakes are self-adjusting by backing up or engaging the emergency brake.
  • Regardless of care, brakes should most likely be replaced every 20,000- 30,000 miles. “Of course, how and where someone drives will greatly influence when brakes should be replaced,” Powell emphasized.

Kia Motors Enters the Ranks of the 'Top 100 Best Global Brands'

  • Kia's brand valued at $4.1 billion USD to achieve 87th place on global top 100 brand ranking study
  • Advances in product quality, design and innovative marketing were noted as key factors for Kia's dramatic brand value increase

Kia-logo

Kia Motors Corporation enters the exclusive list of the 'Top 100 Best Global Brands,' according to the 2012 study released today by Interbrand, the world's largest brand consultancy agency.

Kia's remarkable increase in brand value is now estimated at $4.1 billion USD, which firmly sets the automaker at 87th place on the 'Top 100 Best Global Brands' list. This is a 50% increase from last year's estimated brand value and far exceeds the average automotive brand value growth rate of 11%. The 2012 edition of Interbrand's annual 'Best Global Brands' study was executed through a comprehensive brand performance analysis using best practice research methodology by expert analysts. The study measures a corporation's financial performance in terms of the raw financial return to investors; role that a brand plays in the actual purchase decision; and brand strength, which is the ability of a brand to secure the delivery of expected future earnings.

The strong increase in Kia's brand value closely mirrors the company's recent surge in global sales, which have posted three consecutive double-digit year-or-year gains to cement Kia's position as the world's fastest growing major automotive brand. Over this three year period (2008-2011), Kia's annual global sales have grown by 81% to nearly 2.5 million units.

Claire Chai, Vice President of Kia Motors Corp. Marketing Division, said, "Entering the 'Top 100 Best Global Brands' validates Kia's commitment to continuously provide exciting and inspiring brand experiences. And it's amazing to see what we can accomplish by staying true to who we are – a young and dynamic challenger that goes beyond expectations.

In addition to the major advances Kia has made on the product front, the company has also been executing numerous large-scale marketing initiatives that have helped raise awareness of the brand, including its sponsorship agreements with the world's premier sporting events like the FIFA World Cup, Australian Open and National Basketball Association. Kia has also made effective in-roads towards engaging its young-at-heart customers through a strong presence on social media channels and innovative advertising campaigns such as the eccentric music-loving hamsters TV commercials seen in the USA for Kia's iconic Soul urban crossover vehicle.

[IGN]: DC And Kia Team Up For JLA Car Fleet

2012-10-04_1606

DC Entertainment and Kia Motors America have now joined forces to create a fleet of Justice League-inspired vehicles combining automotive style with comic book art. The partnership, which will deliver eight individually customized vehicles, harnesses the talents of famed DC artist and co-publisher Jim Lee, who has collaborated on the design of each car.

Each core member of the Justice League of America -- Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg -- has been matched up with a Kia vehicle. The Batman-themed Optima will be the first unveiled during New York Comic-Con on October 10. Other one-of-a-kind vehicles will be subsequently revealed over the next ten months at various events, including SEMA Show in Las Vegas, North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Wonder-Con and San Diego Comic-Con. Additional model bases include the Soul, Sorento, Sportage, Rio and Forte.

The partnership between DC and KMA was originally conceived to benefit "We Can Be Heroes," a giving campaign, dedicated to helping fight hunger in the Horn of Africa and inspired by the heroism of the iconic Justice League characters.

"DC Entertainment is pleased to be partnering with Kia on this program to help raise awareness and funds for the devastating hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa," said Amit Desai, DC Entertainment's SVP of franchise management. "Each of the iconic members of the Justice League is a superhero in his or her own right, but when they band together as the Justice League, they become an unstoppable force for good and right."

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Extreme Summer Heat Can Burn Up Car Batteries

2

Summer’s extreme temperatures can destroy a vehicle’s battery. The Car Care Council advises vehicle owners to have their cars’ batteries tested periodically and replaced, if necessary, to avoid being stranded.

Excessive heat and overcharging shortens the life of a battery. Heat causes battery fluid to evaporate, which then damages the internal structure of the battery. A malfunctioning component in the charging system, usually the voltage regulator, allows too high a charging rate, which will eventually destroy a battery.

“When most motorists think of dead batteries that cause starting failure, they think of severe winter weather, but summer heat is the real culprit,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Many battery problems start long before the temperatures drop. A few simple steps now can help you avoid the cost and inconvenience of a breakdown later.”

To get the most life out of a battery, the Car Care Council suggests the following:

• Be sure the electrical system is charging at the correct rate; overcharging can damage a battery as quickly as undercharging.

• If your battery is the type that needs to be topped off, check it regularly, especially in hot weather. Add distilled water when necessary.

• Always replace a battery with one that’s rated at least as high as the one originally specified.

• Keep the top of the battery clean. Dirt becomes a conductor, which drains battery power. Further, as corrosion accumulates on battery terminals it becomes an insulator, inhibiting current flow.

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Replace the air filter

2

At a minimum, engine air filters should be replaced twice per year as part of car maintenance. So, if you haven't done so already, replacing your car's air filter is a good idea. When an air filter reaches the point where it causes enough of a pressure drop to restrict airflow, the car's fuel economy, performance and emissions begin to deteriorate, getting progressively worse until the dirty filter is replaced.

Kia Partners with Her Highway in a Nationwide Drive to Raise Awareness of Breast Cancer

Kia Provides Vehicles for Drive Breast Cancer Awareness Event

Kia-logo1

  • 10 city, across-the-nation drive event will conclude in New York City to kick off National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October
  • Kia's vehicle fleet plays host to breast cancer survivors, influential women journalists/bloggers and female motorsports drivers

Kia Motors America (KMA) announced today that it has partnered with HerHighway.com, an online site empowering women with bumper-to-bumper automobile knowledge, to supply Kia vehicles for "Drive Breast Cancer Awareness," an across-the-nation drive event, which aims to raise public awareness around breast cancer. The eight-day cross-country road trip will start in Los Angeles on September 25 and finish in New York City on October 2, which marks the start of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

More than 100 women will participate, including breast cancer survivors, journalists, bloggers and race car drivers Shea Holbrook, Ashley Van Dyke and Melanie Troxel. The vehicles that KMA is providing for the drive include the 2013 Kia Sportage EX, 2013 Kia Soul! (Exclaim) and 2012 Kia Optima Hybrid. Along the way, the drivers will make pit stops at various locations to talk about the event and to raise awareness about breast cancer. The public can also follow the drivers via Twitter with the #HerHighway and #Kia hashtags.

"Kia is deeply committed to supporting HerHighway and the 'Drive Breast Cancer Awareness' event which delivers much-needed awareness towards a disease that affects approximately one in eight women in the United States," said Michael Sprague, executive vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. "Kia vehicles such as the Sportage, Optima and Soul are perfect vehicles for a cross-country road trip, and it is our privilege to provide these vehicles that will help HerHighway get the word out about breast cancer."

The "Drive Breast Cancer Awareness" campaign started in 2011 when its founder Christina Selter, HerHighway's Editor-in-Chief, was diagnosed with possible ALCL, a rare form of liquid breast cancer. Since her diagnosis, Selter's goal has been to bring potentially life-saving information about breast cancer to women across the country through this drive. A few weeks after the conclusion of the event, Selter will undergo a full Capsulectomy.

"The best car buying experience I've ever had" says this 5-star review on Edmunds!

"Recently purchased a 2013 Kia Sportage. My sales person was Thomas Chay, nicest guy you ever want to meet. I had previously spoken to Thomas and told him what I was looking for. He told me the color and options I had chosen were hard to find but he would look for me. The next day I noticed that what I told him may have been incorrect so I decided to stop by after work and meet him in person and verify what he was looking for. I hadn't taken a test drive so Thomas convinced me to test drive one that was already on the lot. I was only gone about 20 minutes. Came back and Thomas had written up a deal for me. I told him if it was a great deal I would consider buying the black 2013 EX Sportage. Well what Thomas had written up was less than I had planned to spend so...so far so good. I then told him that I hadn't expected to actually buy today and I hadn't been home from work yet and that I was tired and about to be hungry and didn't want to spend a lot of time there so you tell me what I need to know before I spend a lot of time with the finance guy. Thomas did as much as he could and sent me to finance. Rob Z, finance guy, turned out to be a great guy. I normally hate the finance guys but Rob Z was cool. Treated me just as well as Thomas Chay did. I was probably with him for about 45 minutes to an hour but that was mostly my questions and me take notes and checking folder that I brought with me. I've bought several cars new and used and I've learned to do my research and both these guys were very patient with me and my volume of questions and comparing what they said to my research. I was in and out in about 3 hours and at least an hour and a half of that time was spent with my questions and Thomas going over the features with me. Thomas gave me a good deal and Rob followed up and got me a better rate than my credit union. Bottom line, this was the best car buying experience I've ever had. I'd buy a car from these 2 guys any day!" - amcmillian1

Another 5-star review on Edmunds for Fairfax Kia!

"Even though they are 50 miles from our home, we went to Fairfax because they had the Optima Hybrid in the color and with the options we wanted, and the price over the phone sounded right. When we got there, we learned our car had been rear-ended during a test drive but was coming out of the body shop the next day. Kia had put a new bumper on it, and Fairfax took that into consideration on the price. We agreed on a price and to come back the next day for a test drive and to finish the paperwork. When we got there the next day, we were told that the body shop had left the doors open for weeks while working on it and the power drain had destroyed the Hybrid battery (and you just can't swap out batteries in these things) so they had to get a new battery from the factory which could take months. So another car just like we wanted was on their inventory and scheduled to arrive the following week. To take advantage of the $2000 in incentives that were going to expire that weekend, we signed all the paperwork with the understanding that Fairfax would deliver the car to us. Well, the day our car was to be delivered, Fairfax called and said our car did not come in but another identical one (the third car, now) they were not expecting did. But that meant we had to return to the dealership to redo all of the paperwork; not happy! But we did and during the test drive, we verified that all of the options we wanted were listed on the window sticker, though we did not take the time to verify they were all actually installed. To Fairfax's credit, they had all of the paperwork pre-done and it took less than 5 minutes for us to sign it. (Contrary to some of the other reviews, we thought the business manager provided exceptional service.) The next day it was 93 degrees when I got in the car so I wanted to turn on the cooled seats. That's when we discovered that even though listed on the window sticker as an installed option, there was no switch installed for it in our car. We called Fairfax and after sending them pictures, they went above and beyond by convincing our local Kia dealer to look at the issue instead of making us return to Fairfax AGAIN. Turns out that the factory in Korea installed the wrong console in our Hybrid. Our local dealer simply replaced the console (which contained the cooled seat switch) and everything works fine. The point to all of this is that NONE of these issues were Fairfax's fault. Yet KC, Bryant, and Matt on the sales staff all took ownership of these issues and saw them through to a successful conclusion, and we are happy customers. We definitely would recommend them." - kia4life
