Kia Motors America Extends Partnership With Donorschoose.Org To Benefit Public School Students Nationwide In 2013
After providing educational resources to nearly 500,000 public school students across America last year, Kia Motors America (KMA) today announces a significant extension of its philanthropic partnership with DonorsChoose.org, the online charity that makes it easy for anyone to help students in need. As part of the continuing relationship, Kia is launching a major funding campaign in 2013 that will raise the company’s total impact to $5 million in just two years. To date, Kia has matched the support of 21,000 citizen philanthropists to collectively deliver more than $2.1 million in resources to classrooms nationwide.
“Kia Motors America (KMA) has grown to become the eighth largest brand in the U.S. by volume, and as we grow, our culture and core values compel us to give back to the communities that we call home and contribute to a better future for all,” said Byung Mo Ahn, group president and CEO of KMA and Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia. “The overwhelming response to last year’s collaboration with DonorsChoose.org was truly inspiring, and we are determined to help even more children – and teachers – in need in 2013.”
“Kia’s support has helped bring books, chess sets, butterfly gardens, guitars, basketballs, microscopes, and many more resources to America’s high-need classrooms,” said Charles Best, founder and CEO of DonorsChoose.org. “DonorsChoose.org is grateful for Kia’s renewed commitment to helping thousands of students access the materials they need and the quality education they deserve.”
The announcement coincides with the unveiling of a new racing livery for the No. 36 Kia Racing Optima featuring DonorsChoose.org at a VIP “Stars and Cars” promotional event in New York City. Kia will match consumer donations to classroom projects at public schools near Kia’s network of more than 765 retail showrooms across the country as well as the company’s U.S. headquarters in Irvine, Calif., and assembly plant in West Point, Ga. Earlier this year, Kia highlighted the valuable work of DonorsChoose.org in a marketing integration with NBC’s hit show “The Voice” and made a substantial contribution to the charity’s efforts to rebuild 60 Oklahoma classrooms destroyed by tornadoes.

Kia Motors America’s top-selling urban passenger vehicle, the 2013 Soul, was named to Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com list of the 10 Coolest New Cars Under $18,000. Chosen by the site’s editors, the 2013 Soul was celebrated for its fun and bold design, high-tech offerings and roominess.
“The Soul, which paved the way for Kia’s design led transformation with its fun and funky personality, quickly established a reputation as the spunkiest car in the Kia lineup, and now KBB has recognized it as one of the coolest vehicles on the market,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. “Kia has always strived to provide customers with value, style and substance, and the Soul fulfills that promise with an extensive roster of standard features and unique design that has become iconic.”
The Soul placed third on Kelley Blue Book’s annual list of the coolest cars. Editors at Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com looked for new cars that were fun to own and drive. The Soul’s one-of-a-kind look and feel stood out amongst its competition.

Monday Maintenance Tip: Dilute Your Coolant
Your cooling system needs both coolant-antifreeze and water, so don’t pour undiluted coolant into your cooling system. Dilute it with water to the commonly recommended 50-50 ratio. Similarly, don’t use straight water in your system either. The coolant protects against corrosion and freezing. The water ensures good heat transfer from the coolant to the radiator.

Kia Motors Punks, Rattles And Rolls As Official Vehicle Of Vans Warped Tour For Sixth Straight Year
For the sixth year in a row, Kia Motors America (KMA) is touring the country as the “Official Vehicle of the Vans Warped Tour®”alongside some of today’s most entertaining rock and indie bands. Concertgoers in 39 U.S. cities will be able to enjoy live music performances and visit the Kia Soul Lounge to participate in a variety of interactive experiences in the spirit of this year’s Kia theme, “Rock and Roll. Punk and Soul.” Kia will be the official sponsor of the tour’s two main stages – the Kia Soul Stage and Kia Forte Stage – for the second year in a row, and an exclusive Kia VIP riser will allow select concertgoers to stand above the crowd and enjoy their favorite bands from an elevated, shaded platform.
“Music, pop culture and having fun drive today’s youth culture, and the 2013 Vans Warped Tour couldn’t be a better embodiment of those core, coming-of-age lifestyle elements,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. “Our partnership with the tour allows us to showcase the all-new Kia Soul and Forte, which have always relied on youthful spirit as a cornerstone of their appeal. We’re excited to continue connecting with the young and passionate fans around the country through yet another summer of great music and fun.”
This year, concertgoers will be able to enjoy hours of live music, including exclusive acoustic sets with tour headliners “We Came As Romans” and “Sleeping With Sirens” in select concert locations. Fans also can visit the Kia Soul Lounge, an interactive tent featuring a DJ, daily band autograph sessions, “Show Your Punk” body painting and hair styling stations, and a “Rock and Roll” photo booth where concertgoers can scream and rock out to their heart’s desire. An interactive app will register participants via Twitter and Facebook, and each photo will be made into an animated image that can be shared via the participant’s Twitter and Facebook accounts.
“It is only with the continued support of people like Kia that the Vans Warped Tour is able to offer such a value to the fans,” said Kevin Lyman, founder and producer, Vans Warped Tour. “Warped is the lowest-priced ticket in town for the amount of show it brings the audience.”
Visitors to the lounge also can view and learn more about the all-new 2014 Soul, which boasts more passenger and cargo room than ever before along with a new, more aggressive appearance. Also on display will be the all-new 2014 Forte 5-door, which offers more room, fun-to-drive performance and cutting-edge technology.
Festival participants will be encouraged to “Share their Soul” through an interactive photo sharing game in which concert attendees are tasked with capturing their favorite moments of The Vans Warped Tour in real time based on the tagline “Rock and Roll. Punk and Soul.” Concertgoers are turned into roving reporters, snapping pictures of people rocking out, pretending to drive Kia vehicles and anything else they feel captures the Vans Warped Tour experience. Concertgoers also have the unique opportunity to receive Kia VIP passes, which allow them access to an exclusive private riser near the main stage, or in some cases, on the two main stages themselves, where they can enjoy spectacular views of the day’s biggest performances.
The Vans Warped Tour kicks off on June 15 in Seattle, and will feature more than 125 rock, hip-hop, rap, metal, indie rock and electronic artists, including current chart-toppers and the hottest up-and-comers.

2013 Kia Optima And Sportage Earn Autopacific Vehicle Satisfaction Awards
Two of Kia Motors America’s (KMA) most popular models were recently named to AutoPacific’s annual Vehicle Satisfaction Awards (VSA). The 2013 Optima sedan was named most satisfying Mid-Size Car and the sporty 2013 Sportage was heralded as the most satisfying Compact Crossover SUV by the trusted automotive marketing and product-consulting firm. The 17th annual survey based the results on responses from more than 52,000 new-vehicle owners.
“There is no doubt that competition is stronger than ever and winning the AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Awards is further proof that Kia is offering a strong product lineup for today’s car buyers,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president of marketing & communications, KMA. “The Optima’s combination of stunning design and tremendous value continue to resonate with customers while the Sportage continues to set the bar very high for the compact crossover segment in terms of packaging, performance and style.”
AutoPacific’s VSA identify the most satisfying vehicles for sale in the U.S. market and assist new-car buyers in making informed vehicle purchase decisions. With 294 models and 33 brands from which to choose a new vehicle, AutoPacific’s VSA helps buyers sort through the increasingly complicated selection of products on the market. “The VSA clearly shows buyers which vehicles are at the top of the class they are considering,” continued Peterson.

Kia Racing Scores Victory and Podium Finish in Pirelli World Challenge
Mark Wilkins leads Saturday’s Round Six flag-to-flag in No. 38 turbocharged Optima to capture Kia’s first win of 2013 season and move into second place in Driver Championship
Kia Racing made history in the Motor City last weekend as the first Korean brand to capture the checkered flag at the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, Round Six of the 2013 Pirelli World Challenge (PWC). The win also marks the team’s first victory of the season. A second-place finish in Round Seven of the doubleheader weekend was the third-straight podium finish for Kia driver Mark Wilkins. Wilkins’ stellar weekend behind the wheel of the No. 38 turbocharged Optima moves him into second place in the Grand Touring Sport (GTS) Driver Championship as the season hits the midway point. Leading into the weekend, Wilkins captured the pole position for Round Six with a qualifying lap of 1:41.475 before leading Saturday’s 50-minute contest flag-to-flag to notch Kia Racing’s first victory since the PWC event at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in 2012. Wilkins’ dominating performance in Motown continued Sunday in Round Seven with a second-place result, inching him closer to the GTS points lead.
“It’s just awesome to have such a successful weekend in Detroit. Bringing home the win on Saturday and taking second place on Sunday is a testament to the team and the No. 38 Kia Optima. The new track configuration really suited the Optima, and the Kinetic crew did an amazing job prepping the car for this rough street circuit,” said Wilkins, who found himself drenched in celebratory champagne not once but twice in victory lane. “It was a huge weekend for us in the point standings and keeps us on track for our goal of winning the GTS Championship. We are looking forward to keeping the momentum going next month at Lime Rock Park.”
Kia Racing is now second in the GTS Manufacturer Championship point standings, moving past Acura and trailing Chevrolet by only 16 points.
The weekend was not without its setbacks. Teammate Nic Jönsson’s No. 36 turbocharged Optima sustained serious damage in Round Six Saturday morning and was unable to finish the race or be repaired in time to participate in Round Seven. Coming to the green flag, Jönsson made contact with Peter Cunningham’s Acura TSX. Jönsson spun head-on into the inside concrete wall, impacting it hard and spinning wildly down the front straight. Amazingly, no other cars were involved in the incident. Jönsson was uninjured and walked away from the accident, however his Optima was not so lucky.
“It’s disappointing to say the least. The car was running well and with a fourth-place qualifying slot, we were poised to potentially hold two podium positions by Saturday afternoon. We certainly didn’t expect to be out of the race on lap one,” said Jönsson. “It’s a shame when you consider how hard the crew worked on the car between Austin and Detroit, but I’m happy for Mark. He ran one heck of a weekend and is really riding some momentum right now. So, big picture, I am happy for the Kia Racing team and Kinetic Motorsports as we get ready for Lime Rock.” Jönsson currently sits in 12th place in the Driver Championship standings.
Kinetic Motorsports will head back to its shop in Buford, GA. to prepare and repair the Optimas for yet another doubleheader weekend in Rounds Eight and Nine at Lime Rock Park July 4-6.

Fairfax Kia's Tuesday Maintenance Tip:
Is your car stinky?
Room fresheners often just mask a smell.
-Be sure to use the industrial strength odor eliminators purchased from a home or auto-supply store so they can chemically neutralize the odor and remove it. -Try leaving an open container of baking soda in a smelly car. Sprinkle it on the carpet and under the floor mats, then vacuum up what shows, and where it doesn’t show, leave it.
-An open bag of coffee beans left in the car overnight can also act like a scent filter. Photo: Fairfax Kia's Tuesday Maintenance Tip: Is your car stinky? Room fresheners often just mask a smell.

I had a
wonderful experience at this dealership. In fact, one of the best I have
had at a dealership. It was very simple to drop my car off, get a
shuttle ride back to work and then pick it back up for an oil change.
The service rep even remembered I had taken a shuttle ride and offered
one back, which I didn't need. The oil change was done in less than an
hour (which is unheard of) and they called promptly with no issues.
Great experience. Looking forward to future oil changes if they're all
like this.

Kia Racing Takes 2nd at Inaugural Circuit of the Americas Pirelli World Challenge Event
Mark Wilkins pilots No. 38 turbocharged Optima to Kia’s first podium finish of 2013 season and moves to third place in Driver championship
Like a bull rider in a Texas rodeo, Mark Wilkins grabbed the reins of his No. 38 turbocharged Optima and rode it to a well-deserved and hard-fought second-place finish Sunday in Round Five of the Pirelli World Challenge (PWC) at the world-renowned Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas. The relentless Texas heat wreaked havoc on drivers and tires alike, but Wilkins managed the race well from the driver’s seat and held off Jack Baldwin’s hard-charging Porsche Cayman S for the second step on the podium after a late caution flag bunched up the field of 51 cars with less than 10 minutes to go.
“It was a great weekend for Kia Racing. To grab our first podium of the year feels darn good. The Kinetic crew did an awesome job preparing the No. 38 Optima, and the adjustments they made for Sunday’s race paid dividends,” said Wilkins, who had never driven COTA until this weekend. “We learned a lot from Round Four on Saturday about tire wear, so on Sunday we focused on being patient and more consistent with the car. The Optima performs so well that, naturally, you want to push it, but we had to make sure we had traction left at the end of the race, and I think our results show that we did a good job of tire management on Sunday.”
Wilkins’ podium finish moved him up from fourth to third in the Driver Championship as the series turns to another doubleheader weekend in Detroit at the end of May.
Teammate Nic Jönsson drove his No. 36 turbocharged Optima to fifth place in Round Four on Saturday, following fourth-placed Wilkins across the line. Kia Racing’s momentum continued into Sunday, with the Optimas running third and fourth throughout much of Round Five’s 50-minute contest. With a little over 10 minutes remaining, however, a full-course caution bunched up the field, and on the ensuing restart, Jönsson made heavy contact with the second-place Camaro heading up the hill into turn one. The jarring hit broke the front-right suspension and brake rotor, and Jönsson subsequently collided with the race-leading Camaro, damaging his own car to such an extent that he was unable to continue. Jönsson was credited with a 22nd-place finish and slipped to ninth in the Driver Championship.
“We had a really good car Sunday, and after the caution flag, I felt like we had something for the GTS leaders; I had been saving the tires for the end and this was my chance to make a move,” said Jönsson, who was running third at the time of the incident. “I had a run on the second-place car heading up the hill, but everyone is battling for every inch of race track out there and we just got together. Once that happened, I lost my brakes and couldn’t avoid further contact. It’s unfortunate I collected Lawson while he was in the lead.”
Kia Motors America remains third in the Manufacturer point standings following COTA as the PWC series now turns to the Motor City on May 31-June 2 for Rounds Six and Seven.

"We said why not gave FairFax Kia a try. It's turned out to be the most correct decision we have made." - Eurekarex

After several
hours game playing with another dealer around the area, my wife and I
had been really exhausted and frustrated, not about the price but the
attitude. Then we said why not gave FairFax Kia a try. It's turned out
to be the most correct decision we have made today. Chris, the salesman,
first asked a number then disappeared for like 20 minutes. While I was
thinking ahh another trick playing dealer, he came back with the deal
and a BRAND NEW car. I was totally amazed because that's the most
efficient dealer I had ever met. At first, I was kind of hesitated
because every dealer tries to make you pay some more. But that isn't the
case in FairFax Kia. When we were doing the paper work, I was chatting
with the Chris, the sales manager and the great lady doing the finance
for us. They are all really friendly and helpful. Now my new 2014 Kia
Forte is parked in front my apartment, I cannot be happier.

"I will recommend this dealership to my relatives and friends." - Elvis

Gaithersburg, Maryland
May 14, 2013
I was looking
for a Used Hyundai Accent with low mileage, which got my attention to
the Fairfax Kia website. Nice looking car with a great price, inviting
me to contact the dealer by email to close a deal even before showing up
at the dealer, avoiding to waste time negotiating (my personal way to
do business while buying a vehicle) and just giving the chance to test
drive, agree with conditions and sign papers and pay right away, making a
smooth transaction and a win-win situation. When a buyer is serious,
and the dealer cooperates, like Fairfax Kia did, it is just the best
combination. I will recommend this dealership to my relatives and
friends. Mr. Hoyt Sabo and Mr. Allen Ganji went above and beyond, and
Mr. David Azizi delivered the final product, they were just an amazing
combination to make this deal a reality. Thank you very much guys. Hope
to do business with you again in the near future.

Kia Announces Complimentary Scheduled Maintenance Program for the All-New 2014 Cadenza
Flagship Sedan Arrives with Flagship-Level Maintenance Program
- Complimentary scheduled maintenance program covers up to 36 months or 37,500 miles1
- Cadenza differentiated from competition in newly emerging market segment
“The Cadenza competes in a class in which customers have higher expectations for their ownership experience. Our complimentary scheduled maintenance program – a benefit many would not have previously associated with the Kia brand – fulfills those expectations,” said John Crowe, vice president of service and after sale operations, KMA. “The program helps differentiate the Cadenza from its competition and illustrates Kia’s intentions of launching a credible contender into the emerging space between mainstream and luxury.”
Already a tremendous value at a starting MSRP of just $35,1002 (not including $800 destination), the Cadenza packs power, technology and refinement in Kia’s first full-size sedan, and the newly announced complimentary scheduled maintenance program only adds to the vehicle’s value proposition in its segment. Complimentary scheduled maintenance is available to customers who either purchase or lease3 a new 2014 Cadenza and complete the maintenance work for their vehicles at participating Kia retailers. The complimentary scheduled maintenance program, which excludes wear and tear items such as tires and brakes, is another benefit along with Kia’s industry leading 10 year/100,000 mile new-car warranty and Roadside Assistance4.
UVO eServices Makes Complimentary Scheduled Maintenance EasyAs Kia’s most technologically advanced vehicle, the 2014 Cadenza comes standard with UVO eServices5, which makes scheduling service appointments easier than ever. UVO eServices monitors service intervals and will alert the owner when it’s time to schedule an appointment at a Kia retailer. Following on-screen prompts, the system has the ability to contact the retailer and schedule service appointments at the owner’s convenience. UVO eServices is an enhanced telematics suite that offers a number of safety, maintenance and infotainment functions, including Automatic Diagnostics6, Manual Diagnostics, Scheduled Diagnostics, vehicle maintenance, and eServices Guide, many of which are run through the owner’s Smartphone7 equipped with the UVO eServices app, which is available at no charge8.
Through the UVO eServices owner's portal, known as "Car Care Web," owners can check vehicle diagnostics, vehicle status, maintenance schedules, driving behavior, and schedule appointments with their preferred or nearby Kia retailer via their home computer or mobile device. If UVO's eServices identifies a problem by way of the Automatic Diagnostics function, it will communicate the vehicle's issue(s) and its location to Kia's 24/7 call center or will schedule an appointment online with the nearest Kia dealership upon the owner’s request. Additionally, the user can take advantage of Scheduled Diagnostics from their Smartphone, setting a monthly diagnostic check of the vehicle. Upon completion, any issues found are automatically forwarded to Car Care Web.

Popular Mechanics: 2014 Kia Forte Test Drive
Kia’s little sedan gets a full makeover. Has it moved to the head of the compact class?
On Sale Date: March
Price: $16,000 to $20,000 (est.)
Powertrains: 1.8-liter I-4, 148 hp, 131 lb-ft; 2.0-liter I-4, 173 hp, 154 lb-ft; six-speed manual, six-speed automatic, FWD
EPA Fuel Economy (city/hwy, est.): 28/38
What’s New: Just three-and-a-half years after it launched the original Forte, Kia has created an all-new one. That haste is a clear indication of how competitive the compact-sedan segment has become and, perhaps more telling, a sign of how competitive Kia has become. The original Forte was sharp and packed a fun personality. No other compact offered an audio system whose speakers lit up with each bass beat. But the old Forte lack the fine-detail refinement found at the top of the segment. Kia had to up its game.
The all-new Forte is based upon the same mechanicals as the Hyundai Elantra; the platform-mates have an identical 106.3-inch wheelbase. Also shared is the design of the strut front and twist-beam rear suspension, though Kia engineers have tuned that suspension to suit the Forte. Both engines from the outgoing model are gone. Beneath the hood of the new base LX model is the same 148-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder paired to the same six-speed transmissions that Hyundai uses in all Elantras. The difference here is that, for now, only the Kia Forte EX gets a 2.0-liter direct-injected four-cylinder with 173 hp and 154 lb-ft of torque mated to a six-speed automatic. That engine makes the same power as the outgoing 2.4-liter.
The new Forte isn’t merely a slick design with an additional engine choice. Engineers went to the mat to make the Kia quiet, with loads of extra sound-deadening material in the bodywork, on the floor, and even an upgraded acoustic mat behind the dash that Kia says is the same type used to combat diesel clatter.
Tech Tidbit: Kia’s UVO eServices telematics system, co-developed with Microsoft, doesn’t offer concierge service like you get from OnStar and others. But it does provide a car-care portal through the Web. It can check vehicle diagnostics, receive Google Maps directions sent from the phone to the nav system, connect to emergency services if an airbag deploys, and even help you find where you’ve parked your car. What’s really sweet is that this system comes with no monthly service fee. It’s free for 10 years or 100,000 miles.
Driving Character: To these eyes, the Kia Forte is the best looking car in the compact segment. It’s impressive that a designer can make a compact sedan stand out in a sea of sameness. Perhaps that’s why Kia has promoted its chief design officer, Peter Schreyer, to run its U.S. operations.
The real beauty of the new Forte is under the metal. We drove exclusively fully loaded EX models, and on this top-level Forte it took only a few minutes behind the wheel to notice the refinement improvement. Compared to the old car, and even the Elantra, this Kia is incredibly hushed. In most cars with a direct-injection engine like the Forte EX’s, occupants will hear the clicking of the high-pressure fuel pump at idle. Not here. It’s a major improvement over the original Forte, a car that, if we’re honest, was a little boomy.
Peg the throttle and the EX is deceptively quick. The old 2.4-liter, with 14 more lb-ft of torque, was about as quick as other compacts, and the new engine should be good for a similar mid 7-second 0-to-60 time. You just wouldn’t know by the way it feels. Less exciting is the engine note, which starts to drone as it approaches the redline, so perhaps this is a car geared more for comfort than speed.
The Forte’s suspension does a solid job of soaking up the big bumps while remaining poised enough for moderately quick canyon work. Kia’s engineers say they benchmarked the Ford Focus for their suspension tuning, and it seems as though they’ve come close to hitting that mark. Sharper-edged impacts are more noticeable, at least audibly, than the Ford, but that’s probably because the Forte EX wears aggressive 215/45R17 tires with little sidewall cushioning. Kia’s new FlexSteer system comes as an option on the EX. It’s largely the same system Hyundai uses to provide comfort, normal, and sport steering modes for the electric power steering system. Those modes are less distinct here than on the last Elantra GT we drove.
On the inside, Kia put soft-touch materials where it counts—in the spots where your elbows hit or are likely to hit. Our car came with the optional heated front seats and cooled driver’s seat (an option not found on other compacts). Rear-seat leg- and headroom is plentiful, even for a six-footer, and though the aft seats have an oddly aggressive lumbar support, overall comfort is impressive. Our EX even had a heated rear seat.
Favorite Detail: The cooled glovebox isn’t a breakthrough. But when we encounter the feature on a long drive, we appreciate it. It’s great to have a place to keep your drinks cool on a road trip.
Driver’s Grievance: We appreciate the idea of a small, relatively inexpensive, and fuel-efficient car delivering lots of luxury-level equipment. But an optional cooled seat for the driver alone is just silly. If the driver gets one, shouldn’t the passenger get one too? We could make a case that keeping your co-pilot cool and comfy is exponentially more important.
Bottom Line: The Forte is a solid leap forward for Kia. This stylish sedan is on par with the best in the compact class. So what’s next for the Forte? Expect to see a coupe version unveiled at an upcoming auto show, perhaps with turbocharged power under the hood.

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Don't wash your vehicle when the sheet metal is hot
Don't wash your vehicle when the sheet metal is hot. The heat causes the soap and water to dry much faster than on a cool surface, which can make the washing process harder and possibly dull the finish. First thing in the morning is a good time to do a wash, or, if the vehicle is been parked in the shade for a while, the metal is likely to be cool enough to do it any time of the day.

Kia Racing Drivers Move Ahead in Championship Standings at Pirelli World Challenge (Article)
- Wilkins now sits fourth in Grand Touring Sport (GTS) driver points heading into Round 4
- Nic Jönsson charges to seventh place after starting at the back of the pack for a post-qualifying engine change, moves up to top five in drivers championship points
Just up the road from its U.S.-corporate headquarters in Irvine, Calif., Kia Racing gave its fans reason to cheer loudly with a top-five finish in Round 3 of the Pirelli World Challenge (PWC) at Long Beach presented by Kia. Wilkins, whose turbocharged Kia Optima got faster with each passing lap, was stalking the fourth-placed Aston Martin late in the contest, but his bid for a podium finish was thwarted when the 50-minute sprint race ended under caution. The top-five finish marks the second in a row for Kia Racing and moves both drivers into the top five in driver championship points heading into Round 4 at Circuit of the Americas next month. By virtue of the strong performance, Kia held station in third in the manufacturer championship.
“The Kinetic crew made a lot of progress on the car, and at the end of the race we were definitely faster than the Aston Martin in front of us. We just ran out of time to make a move,” said Wilkins. “It’s great to come out here to Long Beach and race in front of all of the Kia team members and to meet so many great people who support the racing program.”
Wilkins’ teammate, Nic Jönsson, charged through the field in his No. 36 turbocharged Optima to finish in seventh place, an impressive feat considering he started at the back of the pack in 24th place after replacing an engine following a turbo issue in the morning qualifying session. Jonsson’s strong finish allowed him to advance from seventh to fifth in the driver championship standings.
“We definitely had some hurdles to overcome this weekend, but I’m proud of the crew for doing an amazing job getting the No. 36 Optima into race condition after our troubles in qualifying Sunday morning,” said Jönsson. “To come away from a brutal and demanding track like Long Beach with two top-ten finishes and come pretty close to putting Kia Racing back on the podium for their home race is just fantastic, and now we can turn our focus to Circuit of the Americas next month.”
On Friday, coinciding with the Pirelli World Challenge at Long Beach presented by Kia, was the introduction of the No. 36 turbocharged Optima racing machine into Cie Games’ Car Town, a leading social game on the Facebook platform, which allows its nearly 50 million lifetime players to collect and customize virtual cars in garages of their own design and participate in challenges.
