Six Spring Cleaning Tips for your Car Interior

Springtime is here and you know what that means. It’s time to throw out those filthy fast food cups, wipe down that dusty dashboard and let in some fresh air to dispel that smell that’s been bothering you for the last 3 months. Yes, it’s time for some spring cleaning and we want to share six simple tips using common household items to properly clean your car interior without a fuss. Let’s start with the ceiling.

1
1. Ceiling: If the ceiling of your vehicle is made out of fabric material, wiping it too hard with a wet cloth may cause some fuzz. You want to make sure you use a slightly damp washcloth made out of superfine fibers and you can add a bit of neutral detergent as needed.

2. Dashboard: You can wipe the dashboard down with a washcloth and use a car brush or toothbrush to dust any hard to reach spaces.

3. Handles & Steering Wheel: Many cars have leather handles, so you may be tempted to use household leather care products, but it’s not advised. These can make your steering wheel slippery and hinder you from having a good grip. We recommend keeping a dry cloth in your glove compartment to wipe it down every now and then.

4. Heater: Use a dry cloth and cotton swabs to easily access those narrow vent spaces. It’s good to clean these areas to help prevent any allergies and respiratory ailments caused from too much dust.

If you smell something foul when turning on your heater – It could be fungus or a special surprise from a skunk. Mix some mustard powder in warm water and spray it into your vents. Afterwards, run your heater on the strongest mode for 4-5 minutes. This is a very effective way to eliminate odor.

5. Car Seats: Car seats are often the culprit of unpleasant stenches (Think about all the spills, pets and people that have been in your car). You can certainly use various products to clean your seats, but as the saying goes, ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,’ so try to wipe down seats often. Leather seats are easier to clean with a damp cloth and a bit of neutral detergent. For fabric seats, spray water mixed with a neutral detergent and wipe down the seats with a damp cloth, followed with a dry cloth. Make sure to keep the windows down to allow the upholstery to dry completely.

6. Car Floor Mats: For rubber, simply spray it down with soapy water and wipe, and for fabrics, you can always use your household vacuum.

Hopefully we’ve shared some tips you can put to good use and make your car squeaky clean and ready for spring.

Spyshots: 2013 Kia Sorento Facelift

Spyshots-2013-kia-sorento-facelift-medium_2

Kia is getting ready to take the fight to the Germans on every front, and the Sorento SUV, which should debut towards the end of the year, should prove very valuable. The vehicle you see here is a mid-life facelift of their popular vehicle, spotted undergoing winter testing.

The most important change to the exterior will be made to the headlights, which are being completely overhauled. Expect it to get a look that’s not too distant to the new cee’d hatchback for the European market.

Our photographers say the Sorento was being tested together with the Audi Q5 and Mercedes GLK, suggesting is being compared to some very strong benchmarks.

The current generation of the Sorento SUV was first previewed at the New York Auto Show in March 2009. This new generation uses a unistructure body and is Kia's first model built in the United States.

Road Test: 2012 Kia Rio5

0210-rio5

While some manufacturers have been languishing in the bed of boring design — and rightly criticized for doing so — others have been pumping out hit after hit. To my mind, Audi has one of the more stylish portfolios on the market. So, is it by chance then that Kia is another marque blossoming mightily in the styling department?

The answer is really not open for debate. Ever since Peter Schreyer took over as Kia’s design boss after leaving Audi, this once stylistically moribund company (think Sephia) has progressed to the point where it now showcases some of the best-looking cars around. The Soul changed the entry-level ute look, the Sportage has been lauded for changing the face of the typical two-box SUV and the Optima is arguably the best-looking family sedan around. Now comes the Rio5.

Prior to the Rio5’s launch, I thought the Mazda3 was the best-looking small hatch available. The Rio5 more than gives it a run for its money, especially since the 3’s smiley-face makeover. However, the visual appeal of the exterior — you are what you drive, after all — must extend to the cabin. If that happens, the likelihood of a potential punter taking the car for a run around the block rises enormously. So it is with the Rio5.

Gone are Kia’s previous cheesy plastics and inferior fit and finish in favour of something that has substance and style. Yes, there is still a lot of plastic — at least in the base model — but it is richly textured and nicely butted together. That solves the second part of the appeal equation. Look a little deeper and things get even better: The content list is long and better than many of the Rio’s peers. The height-adjustable driver’s seat is comfortable, as are the rest of the seats, and the instrumentation is as clean and clear as the sightlines around the car. It’s a combination that really marks a step forward for those shopping on a budget.

For example, the audio system is worthy of note — not so much for its sound quality but for the fact it is basically UVO-lite, UVO being Kia’s voice-activated infotainment system. Simply push the steering wheel-mounted talk button, say a command and, voila, the preferred station or satellite channel tunes in or a phone number is dialled. Remarkably, unlike so many voice-controlled systems, the Rio’s actually understood my English brogue. For an entry-level audio system and its ease of operation, it has to rank as one of the best.

The car also boasts all of the flexibility demanded. True, sitting three adults in the rear seats is a tad optimistic, but there is plenty of headroom and legroom and enough cargo capacity to satisfy the situation — there’s 15 cubic feet of space with the seats up and 49.7 cu. ft. with them folded flat.

The same applies to the engineering found beneath the Rio5’s sheetmetal. At one time, buying something for less than $20,000 brought handed-down technology — what was once “worn” by an elder sibling was passed down to the younger the instant the R&D costs had been recouped. That is now a thing of the past. The Rio5 is powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine that features everything its more expensive rivals do — direct injection, variable cam phasing and a variable intake, which all conspire to produce 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. This is enough power that the Rio5 does not feel sluggish.

Pair the engine with a six-speed automatic with a manual mode and the powertrain’s work ethic is such that there is plenty of pull off the line (enough to chirp the tires), a strong mid-range and decent response at the top end. No, I am not talking blow-your-socks-off rock ’n’ roll power, but, for most eventualities, the Rio5 satisfies driver demand.  For the record, it takes 10 seconds to run to 100 kilometres an hour and it accomplishes the 80-to-120-km/h passing move in 7.3 seconds. As I say, while not outstanding it is more than competitive in its segment. For example, the more expensive Fiat 500 takes more than 12 seconds to  amble its way to 100 km/h.

In the ride and handling department, the Kia also sits above many of its competitors. It’s not the suspension: In this regard, the Rio5 is a tad harsh, and this is without the sport suspension that comes with the high-end model. It’s the compression damping at the rear that leaves a little to be desired. However, the rest of it is first-rate. The steering is very nicely weighted for an electrically assisted system and the advanced stability control system that keeps the Rio5 shiny side up is more advanced than anything in its segment. It not only does the usual brake intervention to correct oversteer, it also uses the steering to countersteer out of the problem in a manner that remains invisible to the driver. Even in an understeer condition, where playing with the steering would be counter-productive, it lightens the resistance so that, when the driver grabs a handful of wheel, it turns obligingly.

So there you have it — an entry-level car that stands well above its price point. There is an old saying: Reality lags perception. Kia is still perceived as a purveyor of affordable cars. The reality is that it’s producing some segment-busting metal.

Kia releases illustrations of new flagship, rear-wheel drive sedan

Kia_kh_concept3-640x348

Kia Motors has revealed the first official sketches of its all-new flagship sedan, Codenamed KH. It's expected to establish new standards for design flair in the large sedan segment.

Based on the Hyundai Equus platform, the new model is Kia’s first rear-wheel drive sedan and combines innovative design with high-tech features. KH is among the company’s eagerly anticipated new models and will be launched in Kia’s domestic market in the first half of 2012.

Soon-Nam Lee, Kia’s Director of the Overseas Marketing Group, says, “Our all-new flagship sedan integrates all of our key capabilities such as design, performance, high-tech features and infotainment into one striking model.

According to Kia, the KH’s profile was a key focus for the design team. It features a simple side character line to give a feeling of spaciousness while emphasizing the new model’s bold and dynamic image.

The sketches also reveal a bold front-end design inspired by the look of Kia’s recent GT Concept and featuring the automaker’s family-look radiator grille and modern, tapered-back headlamps. Overseeing the design is Kia’s styling chief, Peter Schreyer, the former Audi designer responsible for the lines of the first-generation TT.

Beneath the sheet metal will be the rear-wheel drive platform from the Hyundai Equus luxury sedan, not the smaller Genesis as previously predicted. This means the KH is likely to come with a V-8 engine matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Although launch timings for those overseas markets are undetermined, this all-new rear-wheel drive large sedan will reach North American shores sometime in the near future.

Kia unleashes Trackster concept

Kia-trackster-ext

Kia introduced its Soul-based Trackster concept, powered by a 250-horsepower, turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, mated with a six-speed manual transmission.

Today Kia introduced it’s Trackster concept at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show. This “heavy-metal” version of its Soul is a high-performance model, powered by a 250-horsepower, turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, mated with a six-speed manual transmission.

It rides on 19-inch HRE-K1 monoblock wheels and provides stopping power with Brembo high-performance brakes featuring six-piston calipers up front.

The Trackster enhances the base Soul’s “wild boar with a backpack look.” It’s about an inch longer and 5-plus inches wider than the production Soul, and sports front body-side air scoops and beefed-up rear fenders. Up front it wears LED headlamps, a small Kia “tiger” grille and a carbon-fiber lower valance with a large air intake. The rear-end design complements the front, with air scoops behind the wheel arches, dual round exhausts exiting a blacked-out panel mirroring the front air intake, and taillamps with trim lighting that traces the rear pillars.

Inside are racing seats upholstered in Inferno Red suede inserts and Granite Gray leather outers. The steering wheel also is wrapped in suede. Replacing the rear seat is an equipment tray, providing a spot to rest a helmet.

Kia says the Trackster may not see production, but serves as a “showcase for ideas we may someday pursue.”

Kia Racing received 2nd place on the season-opening of Daytona

The momentum of the 2011 championship-winning season for Kia Motors America's (KMA) motorsports program carried into 2012 with a mere half a car length separating the No. 10 Infinity Audio Forte Koup from a win at Daytona International Speedway. Racing fans were treated to a near photo finish as Nic Jonsson and Andy Lally scored a solid second place finish at Friday's season-opening BMW Performance 200 at Daytona. The weekend started strong as Lally put Kia on the pole for the first time ever with a scorching lap time of 2:06.613, setting a new Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Street Tuner qualifying lap record for the legendary high-banked circuit. In his Kia debut, Mark Pombo qualified the No. 12 Forte Koup in the second position, making for an all-Kia front row on the starting grid.

"A podium finish is an awesome way to start the season. The Continental series is really deep with talent, not just in the driver's seat, but also in terms of engineers and mechanics," said Jonsson. "It's great to have Andy back on the team to help us run for Kia's first manufacturer's championship."

Rain made for treacherous conditions in the first 20 minutes of the race, but once the sun came out, the competition and the temperature heated up. "The rain and wet track made for an exciting start, and we had a good scrap with the BMW guys along the way. But my job was to pass the car off to Nic and let him do his magic," said Lally. "We've started this season the same way we did last season, with a podium here at Daytona. Let's hope we can finish it the same way, too, and score another championship for Kia Racing."

Starting from second place on the grid, the brothers Mark and Mat Pombo had high hopes for their first outing in the No. 12 Infinity Audio Forte Koup and despite two on-track incidents, Mat Pombo ultimately crossed the finish line in a respectable 11th place.

"Achieving back-to-back podium finishes at a demanding track like Daytona speaks to the hard work and dedication of our team's offseason program," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. "Andy and Nic's podium finish is a fantastic start for Kia and Kinetic Motorsports as we look to repeat last season's championship performance, and we are looking forward to more great performances throughout the 2012 season."

Race fans can watch the season-opening BMW Performance 200 at Daytona on SPEED on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 12:00 p.m. ET. Kia Racing fans can catch all the latest news and updates on our fan page at www.facebook.com/kiaracing.>
