Updated 2013 Optima Hybrid Powertrain Improves Performance and Efficiency

 2013 Optima Hybrid

Since its debut, the Optima mid-size sedan has garnered awards and accolades for Kia Motors America (KMA) in recognition of its design, performance and value.  In 2011, the Optima Hybrid introduced a new level of efficiency to the brand’s most popular name plate.  Now, KMA is pleased to announce the arrival of its updated 2013 Optima Hybrid, featuring a more performance-driven and fuel-efficient powertrain as well as more cargo space and premium features.  Value continues to be a strong selling point for the Hybrid with the LX starting at an MSRP of $25,900 and the fully loaded EX at an MSRP of $31,9501.

For 2013, the Optima Hybrid features numerous powertrain refinements for smoothness and drivability, including a more robust 47 HP electric traction motor, a stronger Hybrid Starter Generator (HSG) and a more powerful 47 kW Lithium Polymer battery.  With a combined 199 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque – an increase of 40 lb-ft – the Optima Hybrid is noticeably more responsive and performance-driven than before.

The Optima Hybrid is now available in two trim levels, LX and EX.  The base model achieves an EPA estimated 36 mpg city, 40 mpg highway and 38 mpg combined2, making the Optima Hybrid more efficient than its predecessor3.  The EX model delivers an EPA estimated 35 mpg city, 39 mpg highway and 37 mpg combined2.

In addition to increases in performance and efficiency, the 2013 Optima Hybrid also benefits from greater trunk space than before, thanks to the repackaging of the vehicle’s battery pack. Furthermore, the EX model adds navigation with Rear-Camera Display4, an 8-speaker Infinity® audio system5, panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats and 17-inch wheels to the already long list of amenities.

The Optima Hybrid builds on the gasoline-powered Optima, offering improved aerodynamics and using lighter weight components.  Lighter and more aerodynamic 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels, LX and EX respectively, reduce weight and drag, while superbly integrating with the Optima’s stunning design.  Extensive use of aluminum instead of steel for the lower front and rear control arms, tie rod ends and rear knuckles helps offset the weight of the hybrid components.  Improved aerodynamics are gained via the Optima Hybrid’s lowered ride height, full belly pan and rear spoiler.  Other Optima Hybrid differentiators include satin finished front grille surround and trim on the lower front fascia and side sills, and unique front and rear lighting.  For 2013, the newly revised Kia badge is applied to the hood, trunk lid and steering wheel.

1 MSRP $25,900 for LX model. MSRP $31,950 for EX model. MSRP excludes destination and handling, taxes, title, license fees, options and retailer charges. Actual prices set by retailer and may vary
2 Based on EPA estimates. Actual mileage will vary with options, driving conditions, driving habits, and your vehicle’s condition.
3 MPG claim based on base trim compared with MY12 Optima Hybrid.  Based on EPA estimates.  Actual mileage will vary with options, driving conditions, driving habits, and your vehicle’s condition.

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Protecting your car's interior from sun damage

The effect of ultraviolet rays and heat can quickly destroy the cloth, leather and vinyl inside your car. While there is not singular remedy to protect a vehicle from the sun, we suggest the following measures to help keep your car's interior looking its best.
  • Use a windshield sunshade to protect your interior against the fading of cloth and drying of leather and vinyl.
  • Window tinting minimizes damaging effects of the sun.
  • For extra protection, apply vinyl and leather protectant at regular intervals.

Fourth-Annual Kia Classic Moves to Aviara Golf Club Located at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort
  • Strong field of players from around the world will compete for $1.7 million purse
  • Kia Classic winner will receive a new 2014 Cadenza premium sedan – the most powerful and technologically-advanced Kia ever in the U.S. market
Kia Classic Logo
After relocating in each of its first three years, the Kia Classic LPGA golf tournament has found a new home at the Aviara Golf Club, located at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort in Carlsbad, Calif.  When play finishes on Sunday, March 24, the winner will take home a check for $255,000 as part of the event’s $1.7 million purse, as well as a new 2014 Kia Cadenza, the most powerful and technologically-advanced vehicle the brand has ever introduced in the U.S.

"Women’s professional golf is exciting and fun, and as a Southern California-based company Kia has been proud to share the action and energy of the tour with the community we call home.  We are eagerly anticipating this year’s Kia Classic at its new permanent home at the Aviara Golf Club,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president, marketing & communications, Kia Motors America.  “As usual, the Kia Classic has attracted a talented field of women who have the opportunity to win our new flagship sedan for the U.S. market, which we will showcase to golf fans watching the action live from Aviara Golf Club and on TV.”

Following strong event-attendance and TV-ratings growth in the tournament’s third year, Kia Motors America recently signed a multi-year contract extension as title sponsor of its namesake tournament. The venue for the 2013 Kia Classic, Aviara Golf Club, which was named by Golf Digest and Golf Magazine as one of the best resort golf courses in America and the No.1 golf resort in San Diego according to the readers of Condé Nast Traveler, overlooks the beautiful Batiquitos Lagoon ecological reserve and is the only San Diego golf course designed by Arnold Palmer.

New 2014 Cadenza Premium SedanThe Cadenza expands Kia Motors America’s lineup of inspiring and award-winning vehicles while moving the brand up-market with an impressive list of premium standard and optional equipment, including Advanced Smart Cruise Control (ASCC)1 , Blind Spot Detection (BSD) and Lane-Departure Warning System (LDWS).  With its distinctive front fascia and swept C-pillars, the Cadenza’s taut European design language is evident.  That it’s propelled by Kia’s most powerful V6 engine further announces its intentions to provide an invigorating driving experience.  Inside, unparalleled premium appointments for five occupants strike the ideal balance between sport and luxury. The Cadenza is expected to arrive in Kia retail showrooms in the second quarter of this year*, and pricing will be announced closer to the vehicle’s on-sale date.

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Don't rely just on reflectivity to judge your paint's condition

 http://image.motortrend.com/f/images/10041282+w798+h500+cr1+ar0/0004_MTRP_02_I_CC-C.jpg

Myth: You can assume that a finish that looks glossy is in good shape.

Reality: There are different degrees of glossiness, and a paint can dull so gradually you may not realize it's happening. For this reason, don't rely just on reflectivity to judge your paint's condition. Use your sense of touch, as well. Place your clean, dry hand flat against the paint and slowly rub it along the surface. Feel with both palm and fingertips. A well-maintained finish should feel smooth as glass. Any roughness could be due to oxidation, tree sap mist, or adhered grit, all of which degrade a paint's gloss to some degree.

Reader's Digest names Kia Soul "Best Car Deal Under $15,000"

  • Soul combines out-of-the-box design, quality, safety and technology features with a low cost of ownership
  • Reader’s Digest accolade adds to Soul’s long list of awards
2013 Soul

Kia Motors America (KMA) has been one of the fastest-growing car companies in the United States over the last five years1, and its top-selling urban passenger vehicle, the Soul, adds another award to the collection after being named one of the “Best Car Deals Under $15,000” by Reader’s Digest.  Announced in the March issue of Reader’s Digest, five cars were awarded this distinction with the Soul standing out for its innovative design and technological advancements.

“The Soul is the vehicle that sparked Kia’s design led transformation back in 2009, and it has been a runaway hit ever since,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. “Inclusion in the Reader’s Digest list is another great honor for Kia, recognizing our funky urban passenger vehicle’s winning combination of technology and value.  It’s gratifying that the vehicle that jumpstarted our unprecedented growth continues to resonate so well.”
The Soul was named the best car for high-tech drivers, with Reader’s Digest editors noting that the base model offers customers Bluetooth®2 hands free connectivity and USB connections for audio and recognizing the Eco package for its focus on efficiency.

Reader’s Digest aims to enrich our readers’ lives by helping them navigate and discover high-quality products in the marketplace,” said Liz Vaccariello, editor-in-chief and chief content officer, Readers Digest.  “We chose the Kia Soul for tech-savvy drivers, based on its value, amenities, design and that it’s packed with new technology that will help simplify their lives.”

About the 2013 SoulRefreshed for the 2013 model year the Soul features technology and styling upgrades, bringing a new level of cool with enhanced power and efficiency. New for 2013 are power-folding side mirrors, darkened chrome around the signature grille, upgraded leather on the leather-wrapped steering wheel, standard Bluetooth® wireless technology with steering wheel-mounted controls, standard steering wheel-mounted audio controls, and cruise control. The Soul now offers Idle Stop and Go (ISG) technology as part of the Eco Package which senses when the vehicle is stopped and shuts off the engine to maximize efficiency and results in reduced engine load and less fuel consumption.

Kia’s Unprecedented Growth
Kia Motors America is one of only three auto brands to increase U.S. sales in each of the past four years, and in 2012 the company surpassed the 500,000 unit mark for the first time. With a full line of fun-to-drive cars and CUVs, Kia is advancing value to new levels of sophistication by combining European-influenced styling – under the guidance of chief design officer Peter Schreyer – with cutting-edge technologies, premium amenities, affordable pricing and the lowest cost of ownership in the industry. Kia recently joined the exclusive ranks of Interbrand’s “Top 100 Best Global Brands,” and is poised to continue its momentum with seven all-new or significantly redesigned vehicles scheduled to arrive in showrooms in 2013. Over the past decade Kia Motors has invested more than $1.4 billion in the U.S., including the company’s first U.S. assembly plant in West Point, Georgia – Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia – which is responsible for the creation of more than 11,000 plant and supplier jobs. The success of the U.S.-built* Optima and Sorento in two of the industry’s largest segments has fueled Kia’s rapid growth and is complemented by Kia’s comprehensive lineup which includes the Soul urban passenger vehicle, Sportage compact CUV, Optima Hybrid, the Forte sedan, 5-door and Koup compacts, Rio and Rio 5-door sub-compacts and the Sedona minivan.

About Kia Motors America Kia Motors America is the marketing and distribution arm of Kia Motors Corporation based in Seoul, South Korea. Monday Maintenance Tip! Be cognizant of the weather and check your tire pressure.

When outside temperatures drop or soar, tires tend to lose pressure. A drop of 10 degrees F (6 degrees C) will decrease a tire’s air pressure by 1 or 2 pounds. Tires can lose even more air in hot weather. Under-inflated tires can result in accelerated wear and poor driving performance.

Fixing a car that is out of tune or has failed an emissions test can boost gas mileage by about 4 percent. So be sure to give your car regular tune-ups. You'll also want to watch out for worn spark plugs. A misfiring spark plug can reduce a car's fuel efficiency by as much as 30 percent.
